Industrial electricity sales in South Korea, Asia’s fourth-biggest energy consumer, rose the most in almost 34 years after factories boosted output as the global economic recovery spurred demand for cars and steel.
Sales jumped 24 percent by volume in January from a year earlier, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said in an e-mailed statement today. That’s the largest increase since February 1976.
The nation’s exports increased 47.1 percent in January from a year earlier. Power demand from carmakers rose 49.4 percent and the steel industry used 43 percent more electricity, data from the ministry showed. Industrial use accounts for more than half of overall consumption.
Total electricity sales, including demand from households, gained 15.6 percent last month amid colder winter weather, the ministry said. Temperatures averaged minus 1.6 degree Celsius (29 degrees Fahrenheit) in January, compared with minus 1 degree Celsius a year earlier.
